Aim

This is a new and exciting course offered by the Adult Education Service Balbriggan. The purpose of this award is to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skills and competence in plant care and horticultural sector with a view to re-skilling/up-skilling the student in future employment or study.

Ideally located in North County Dublin where there is a rich history of market gardening and horticulture production with a need for skilled staff. As well as plant care and knowledge, we will equip students with the digital skills required to enter the workforce with confidence and skills set required in a modern growing centre.

Progression

Successful completion of the course will enable students to seek work in a horticulture/plant care environment and / or the opportunity to progress on to further or higher education and employment.

Entry Requirements

To ensure that you are offered a place on a course which is at the right level for you and appropriate to your learning needs all applicants are assessed prior to placement on the course. A high level of English language and IT skills are required for the course.

QQI Level 5N2586 Horticulture

Attendance

This course is full-time over one year, five days in class in term 1, 4 days in class and one-day work experience placement in Term 2. Start times are 9:15 and finish times 14:30 approximately, Monday to Friday.

Work Experience Placement

The award will be built around the concept of integrated work placement (40 days in work placement blocks and throughout the course) with industry leaders and growers in North County Dublin.

Eligibility

This course is funded under VTOS funding. In order to be eligible, applicants must be:

  • 21 or over the first day the course starts
  • in receipt of a Social Protection Payment for 6 months (156 days) immediately prior to starting the course. Please see the VTOS ‘Am I Eligible?’ section of FAQs for a list of qualifying social protection payments.
