What will I learn?

If you like gardening, garden design and all things horticulture this is the course for you! A very practical hands on course, be prepared for the muck! There is the perfect blend of learning by doing and theory of horticulture and gardening. The purpose of this award is to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skills and competence in plant care and horticultural sector with a view to re-skilling/up-skilling the student in future employment or study.

Ideally located in North County Dublin where there is a rich history of market gardening and horticulture production with a need for skilled staff. As well as plant care and knowledge, we will equip students with the digital skills required to enter the workforce with confidence and skills set required in a modern growing centre.

How is this course taught?

This course is taught in person, over a 9 month period starting in September 2024. Start times are 9:15 and finish times 14:30 approximately, Monday to Friday, with one day assigned to work experience. The course follows as school calendar with mid-term, Christmas and Easter holidays.

When will this course take place?

The next course modules will start in September 2024 and finish in May 2025.

Who can apply for this course?

Eligible Adults (See eligibility below) who live in the Fingal and surrounding area can apply for this course. To ensure that you are offered a place on a course which is at the right level for you and appropriate to your learning needs all applicants are assessed prior to placement on the course. A high level of English language is required. IT skills are required for the course and an interest and aptitude for beauty.

Am I eligible for this course?

This course is funded under VTOS funding. In order to be eligible, applicants must be:

  • 21 or over the first day the course starts
  • in receipt of a Social Protection Payment for 6 months (156 days) immediately prior to starting the course. Please see the VTOS ‘Am I Eligible?’ section of FAQs for a list of qualifying social protection payments.
